COSMOS stands for COSMetic Organic and Natural Standard. Together they formed COSMOS-standard AISBL, a non-profit organisation based in Belgium that owns and governs the standard.

COSMOS Natural vs COSMOS Organic: What Is the Difference?
There are two certification tiers, and the distinction matters.
COSMOS Natural
COSMOS Natural products must meet strict rules on ingredient sourcing and processing. All ingredients must be natural in origin or derived from natural sources using approved, low-impact processes. Synthetic fragrances, silicones, parabens, and a long list of other ingredients are prohibited entirely. The formulation as a whole must meet minimum thresholds for natural-origin content.
COSMOS Organic
COSMOS Organic builds on the Natural standard and adds an organic requirement. A minimum percentage of the total formula must come from certified organic agriculture, and a higher proportion of the plant-based ingredients specifically must be organically grown. Products certified to COSMOS Organic carry both the COSMOS Organic mark and can also reference the certifying body's own organic logo (such as ECOCERT or Soil Association Organic).
In short: every COSMOS Organic product meets the COSMOS Natural threshold, but not every COSMOS Natural product qualifies as COSMOS Organic. The organic tier simply sets a higher bar for how ingredients are grown and sourced.
What Does COSMOS Actually Verify?

No. COSMOS uses a detailed allowed-processing list that permits certain chemical transformations where a natural starting material is converted into a safe, functional ingredient using low-impact chemistry.
